HOPE Global Forum opens in Atlanta with a reception that has a real talk about money
John Hope Bryant, Randal K. Quarles, and Ambassador Andrew Young kick off Opening Night Reception at Atlanta Marriott Marquis |
Atlanta Marriott Marquis Ballroom
On Monday, March 26th the Marriott Marquis Ballroom in Atlanta, Georgia served as the ideal place to witness some of the foremost thought leaders have a very vivid conversation about money. The Opening Reception kicked off with a frank revelation about the state of the economy for a group of people rarely in the spotlight- the underserved.
Leaders of the New World Order
Ambassador Andrew Young, a former Mayor of Atlanta and a current Civil Rights Activist, along with Randal K. Quarles, Federal Reserve Vice Chairman for Supervision, and John Hope Bryant, Chief Executive Officer of nonprofit Operation HOPE shared very real and startling information about the current structure of the economy when identified by race and class. The trio started off giving different accounts of the importance of credit rating and home ownership and how the lack if these things are barriers that prevent financial inclusion for many in middle class and poor groups.
Randal K. Quarles, Federal Reserve Vice Chairman for Supervision
"When the Fed Speaks the world listens!" said Mr. Bryant as he introduced Mr. Quarles to the standing room only crowd. The Vice Chairman spoke about the Small Business Access to credit and Financial Inclusion. Within his speech he highlighted
3 trends emerging in Small Business Lending:
- Low credit risk firms rarely approved and if so for less than what they are asking for...
- More small businesses declining the credit card product since they are unable to use the product for traditional means
- Emergence of Non-Bank Online Lenders and the vulnerability of managing more risk with this type of lender
The conclusion of Mr. Quarles speech ended with noting that even more financial products of innovative nature are expected to continue to come unto the financial scene. Still, the challenge is for small businesses to protect themselves from risk and to maintain a credit rating that will allow the viability of use of the new technology.
Journalist, Roland Martin, and Civil Rights Activist, Jesse Jackson joined the stage next to continue the candid conversations about money and what needs to happen to create a new vision for economic inclusion. Obviously, with such a powerful opening night the forum continues to stand as a must attend event when learning the world of finances.
